intermediate approach segment
- intermediate approach segment
That segment of an instrument approach procedure between either the intermediate approach fix and the final approach fix or point, or between the end of a reversal, race track, or dead reckoning track procedure and the final approach fix or point, as appropriate (ICAO). This is the segment during which the aircraft speed and configuration should be adjusted to prepare the aircraft for final approach. For this reason, the descent gradient is kept as low as possible. During the intermediate approach, the obstacle clearance requirement reduces from 1000 ft (300 m) to 500 ft (150 m) in the primary area, reducing laterally to zero at the outer edge of the secondary area. Where a final approach fix is available, the intermediate approach segment begins when the aircraft is on the inbound track of the procedure turn, base turn, or final inbound leg of the racetrack procedure. Where no final approach fix is specified, the inbound track is the final approach segment.
